How comment-to-DM campaigns should work

A practical framework for turning post and reel comments into useful private conversations.

A good comment-to-DM campaign does not merely send a link. It recognises intent, delivers the promised value and creates a natural next step.

1. Start with one clear promise

Tell people exactly what to comment and exactly what they will receive. “Comment CATALOGUE and we will DM it” is clearer than asking for a random emoji.

  • Match one keyword to one campaign outcome.
  • Keep the public call-to-action visible in the creative or caption.
  • Do not surprise the customer with unrelated marketing.

2. Acknowledge publicly, continue privately

The public reply confirms that the brand noticed the customer. The private message should immediately deliver the expected information before asking qualification questions.

  • Keep the public reply short.
  • Open the DM with campaign context.
  • Give the customer an obvious next action.

3. Qualify without interrogating

Ask only for information that materially changes the recommendation or sales handover. Product, location, budget or timeline may matter; ten fields usually do not.

  • Use buttons when choices are predictable.
  • Ask one question at a time.
  • Always allow a human handover.

4. Measure the complete journey

Comment count is not the business result. Track DMs delivered, replies, qualified leads, handovers and actual next actions.
